There is no question that few were expecting this type of regular season from the Hawkeyes this season. If you would have told me that this team would have been battling this many injuries and still made the NCAA tournament this season I would have laughed in your face. The team only goes eight deep as a result of all the injuries. Two of which have been starters in the past. There is no question that Coach Fran McCaffery did an outstanding job getting the most out of his roster and talent this season. It also helps he had the National Player of the Year (probable) in Luka Garza just going nuts every single game. This is also why he deserves the NPOY Award because of the lack of depth and help he had every single night. Every team's gameplan was to double and triple-team him while being as physical as possible. He definitely earned every single award he gets!
In my preview, before the season, I predicted Iowa would go 16-15 overall and 9-11 in Big Ten play. They ended up finishing 20-11 and 11-9 in Big Ten play. They won a few games that at the start of the season I thought they had absoutely no shot in and then they lost some games I thought they should have absolutely won. I knew the Big Ten conference would be a good conference, however, I could not have predicted that the conference would be one of the deepest we have seen in quite some time. If I would have known that I would have probably predicted Iowa to finish with a worse record (lol). The funny thing is Iowa could have finished with a better record if they beat Nebraska on the road and for some reason an average Purdue team does not have their number. Freshman Joe Touissant and Sophmore Connor McCaffery were both bigger contributors than I would have ever dreamed this season. Both players got a lot better as the season progressed. There's no doubt my starters and rotation predication was a little off. This experience should benefit the team moving forward. In the preview, my predication on Freshman Guard CJ Fredrick could not have been more true. This is what I said about him in the preview:
This could not have been more true throughout the season. The Hawk's seemed to get better defensively at points during the season but defensive rebounding is something that plagued the team all season long. It is always fun looking back on a preview before the season starts and seeing what you predicated correct and of course wrong. My favorite mistake that I made was predicting that the Hawks would lose in Ames to their little brothers!
Hopefully, the team has some March magic moving forward and we get to witness a deep run in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments! Below is the season schedule with my predictions and actual results. Bold means I made the correct result for that matchup. Make sure to check it out and thanks for reading!
Iowa Basketball Preview Revisited

"I have read nothing but great things about CJ Fredrick and he looks to have a large role as a combo guard this season. Redshirting last year has the potential to greatly benefit him moving forward".The team looked like an entire different team was Fredrick who was out with injuries this season. The redshirting comment looks to be entirely true. Look for Fredrick to be a huge problem for the rest of Big Ten for the next three seasons. My favorite quote from the preview is:
"Defense and rebounding are the two biggest question marks on this year's team".
This could not have been more true throughout the season.
